Typhoon 14 and bugs
On Thursday of last week I ended up seeing Star Wars Episode 3 for the 5th time in the theater. I went with some other people who had not see it yet and on the 1st of every month in Japan movie's are specially priced at 1000yen. Which is like $8.75 or something, but normally the tickets are 1,800yen. So it was a deal. One thing to note is that they don't really gouge to severly on food and drink prices as they do in the States. We then had dinner at an awesome Italian restaurant in some ally in Wakayama city. It was a cool place with a realyl cool seating arragenment.
I did a little yaki-nikuing in a small warehouse in Yura-cho with a teacher friend of mine, Kitayama-sensei. I couldn't really shoot the shit them, but it was still fun. First time I ever eat entire pieces of garlic. Yura is a cool place too. It is a sort of weird, it is an average sized town, but happens to have a deep water port with several slips. So, more often then not, if you drive along the beach road, you'll just see normal Japan things like narrow twisty roads, tons of fishing boats, little islands a little bit off of shore, and then Bam, a huge ocean cargo ship that is like 8 stories tall and almost a kilometer long. It is a really cool site. It just seems sort of out of place in Yura.
After going to a Bunraku, Japanese doll play, instruction seminar with the BOE and a bunch of middle schools I then headed to Osaka and hung out with Joe and played some pool in Nanba. Bunraku was interesting. It takes 3 people to operate one doll. They also had a few students try playing the instruments, reading the narration, and moving the dolls.
So Typhoon 14 is coming right now, it is pretty far west though. It is still sunny here in Miyama, but a bit breezy, which doesn't really happen to much here in the mountians. But the last couple of days have been rainy and bugs love rain. So I encountered one of my worst fears in Japan, to find a mukade(large centipede) in your bed while you are in it. I was just sleeping, and then I shifted positions and my right hand touched something cool and wet. Yet it wasn't wet maybe slimy but not gooey or sticky. I immediatly woke up then, and was like WTF, I then saw a green mukade next to my pillow. I didn't freak out though, I was just pissed off. I grabbed a kleenex and then tossed it down the toilet. What was weird is that it was green with some black, and it wasn't very big, maybe about 3 inches long. Usually the nasty mukade are about 7 or 8 inches long and are black/goldish with red/orangy legs. So I am thankful it wasn't a nasty one, but I have see one of the nasties in my room earlier this year. Plus, last night I came back home to be greeted in my kitchen by a fucking cockroach. One of the 3 incher shits. This guy got 3 heavy doses of my bathroom cleaner before he escaped by crawling into a small crevase just underneath the grill part of stove. I can't get in there. I don't think it sruvived the bathroom cleaner, but just in case it did I turned on the grill on high for about 2 mintues to either see if I can get it to come out or just take of it. It never came out so I am going to have to take it apart or something and clean the bottom part. Pain in the ass.
This is my first week back at teaching. Yesterday's elementry school went great. Today the junior high has a test day so I don't have class today. I also forgot to punch in this morning, I jsut went straight to the junior high.
